MSc/GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN SUSTAINABLE RURAL DEVELOPMENT

This is an established programme delivered by The Gibson Institute, Queens University Belfast, in collaboration with The Rural College.  The MSc is a three year part-time course.  It takes 2 years to complete the Diploma and students who have successfully completed the Diploma and submit a satisfactory research proposal may progress to the MSc by completion of a dissertation in Year 3. 

In any one year there are six teaching weekends in Semester 1 from October to December and six during Semester 2 from February to May. Teaching is on Friday 3pm – 6pm and 7pm – 9pm and on Saturday 9am – 12noon.

Entrants to the course will normally be expected to have at least an Honours Degree in an appropriate subject. Mature students who do not meet this requirement will be considered on an individual basis.

DIPLOMA IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PRACTICE

This course will be of interest to those involved in or interested in community/local development work. It is particularly relevant to those working with, or as part of, a local development group. It will also be of use to those working in agencies, local authorities or government departments who come into contact with community groups and who would welcome a more in-depth insight into community development practice.

The course is taught over 32 evening sessions/one per week. A weekend residential and Saturday based study visit will be arranged in consultation with class members.

The course programme comprises of six modules:
a) Social analysis
b) Research methods
c) Project planning and management
d) Communications, leadership and group work
e) Public policy
f) Community development practice.

Assessment will be by means of:

  • Four written assignments and one research project
  • Level of attendance
